Why would my IPOD go from showing MP3 to WMA after i have installed new batteries, is there a way to fix this?

hold up how did you have to install batteries? Anyway WMA is using windows to play your music instead of MP3. You will have to reinstall you iPod software. Go to iTunes.com or Apple.com
